10C Pensacola journal Wednesday, March 26, 1980 PATROL Associated Press Photo Striking security guards wave picket signs Tuesday at work-bound employees. Space center firefighters, guards stage wildcat strike CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) Security guards set up pickets at the gates of the nation's space complex Tuesday and unionized firefighters left their jobs in what officials called a wildcat strike. An estimated 150 guards employed by a subsidiary of the Miami-based Wackenhut Corp. struck in a dispute over cost-of-living pay hikes. Late Tuesday a spokesman for the firefighters said they were not on strike but did not report to work because of threats made against them.

John Reynolds, section chairman of the Transportation Workers Union local to which the firefighters belong, said, "We are going by the Norris- LaGuardia Act under which you don't have to cross a picket line if you feel your life or property is in danger." He said that Monday night several firefighters, including himself, received telephoned threats and that rocks were thrown at the fire station. He said the firefighters decided individually not to report to work Tuesday. The firefighters' contract expires March 31. The guards, members of the United West Florida Deaths KSC 9 PAT LOCAL A ON AGAINST ST. Plant Guard Workers, want to continue with the "uncapped" cost of living raises they've had for three years.

Wackenhut says it will suffer competitively if pay goes up indefinitely. Pickets went up Tuesday morning at the four perimeter gates to the Kennedy Space Center, including the Air Force gate to Cape Canaveral. William Horner, deputy chief of security for the center, said Wackenhut supervisors took over the posts abandoned by the guards. Harold Gooch, labor relations chief for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration here, said 50 to 60 firefighters at two stations in the space complex were off job. He said the morning shift failed to show up and men already at work on earlier shifts refused to work overtime.

Supervisors replaced them, he said. The firefighters also are employed by Wackenhut but are represented by a different union, the Transport Workers. Transport union spokesman Reynolds said late Tuesday that the firefighters had asked Wackenhut for protection so they could return to work. DETROIT, Mich. Bettye J.
